Stroke Recovery & Rehabilitation Certification Program
Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine
The Canadian Stroke Consortium’s National Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Fellowship Certification Program promotes consistency in advanced fellowship training and trainee evaluation across Canada. Through consultation and active collaboration with key stakeholders in stroke rehabilitation and recovery, the CSC Stroke Fellowship Committee has developed a standardized national curriculum that includes:
- Training objectives and core competencies in stroke rehabilitation and recovery
- Core program and clinical training requirements
- Standardized evaluation methods and online learning resources, and two levels of certification for fellows.
Completion of the program will result in certification as a Fellow of the Canadian Stroke Consortium Recovery and Rehabilitation (FCSC-RR) Program.
The program has two streams:
- Expert Stream (FCSC-RR-E) – a one-year program focused mainly on clinical expertise
- Scholar Stream (FCSC-RR-S) – a two-year program focused on clinical expertise and research

| For physicians practicing or who will practice in primary, secondary care and some tertiary settings seeking to acquire additional expertise in stroke recovery and rehabilitation medicine and to fulfil stroke leadership roles locally. | |
| Scholar Stream (FCSC-RR-S) – 2 Years | |
| For physicians practicing or who will practice in an academic tertiary care setting seeking to become stroke recovery and rehabilitation experts and to participate in stroke recovery and rehabilitation research, education, administration and leadership. | |
| Year 1: Emphasis is on attainment of competency-based milestones Year 2: Emphasis is on research or QI activities | |
Eligibility
- Applicants (MD or MD/PhD) must have been accepted into a recognized site participating in the CSC Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Fellowship program in Canada
- Must be a Canadian resident or permanent resident or hold a valid Canadian work permit or student visa.
- Must have prior training and competency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation / Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine

FCSC-RR Participating Center Requirements:
- Administrative Structure
- There must be an appropriate administrative structure for each Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Medicine program.
- Resources
- There must be sufficient resources including: teaching faculty, number and variety of patients, physical and technical resources, as well as the supporting facilities and services necessary to provide the opportunity for all trainees in the program to achieve the educational objectives and receive full training as defined by the Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Medicine fellowship objectives.
- Educational Program
- There must be a defined educational program that includes relevant clinical, academic, and scholarly content. The program must be designed to ensure that each trainee is able to achieve all the competencies described in the Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Medicine Training requirements and General Objectives document.
- Competency-Based Assessment of Trainee Performance
- There must be mechanisms in place to ensure the systematic collection and interpretation of assessment data on each trainee enrolled in the Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Medicine program.
