2025-2026 StrokeCog Postdoctoral Fellowship Funding Opportunity
 
The StrokeCog Post-Doctoral Fellowship competition provides funding for up to five awards to support the training of future experts in stroke and vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) clinical trials. This initiative aims to develop highly skilled researchers advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for individuals affected by stroke-related cognitive decline. The fellowship fosters innovative research, professional development, and collaboration among emerging leaders in the field, equipping them with the expertise needed to drive impactful clinical advancements.
 
Eligibility:

Applicants (PhD/MD) must have been accepted into a recognized research Post-Doctoral Fellowship position in a Canadian institution, with a start date before December 31, 2025.

Must be a Canadian resident or permanent resident or hold a valid Canadian work permit or student visa.

Must be engaged in scholarly work focused on clinical trials in stroke and/or Vascular Cognitive Impairment. This may take the form of a clinical trial, or analysis of clinical or behavioural trial samples and/or data, and which are aligned with the vision and mission of StrokeCog.

Term: The award covers ONE (1) year of training.

Funding value:   The maximum potential total for this award is $62,500, including up to $10,000 as operational funds to be used for PWLE and/or family/caregiver community engagement.

The StrokeCog Stroke Rehabilitation Fellowship competition provides funding for up to three awards to support the training of future physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) experts in stroke and Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI) rehabilitation. This initiative aims to develop highly skilled clinical PM&R researchers engaged in stroke and/or VCI clinical trials, advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for individuals affected by stroke-related cognitive decline. The stroke rehabilitation PM&R fellowship fosters innovative clinical research, professional development, and collaboration among emerging stroke rehabilitation leaders in the field, equipping them with the expertise needed to drive impactful clinical advancements.
 
Eligibility:

Applicants (MD or MD/PhD) must have been accepted into a recognized Stroke Rehabilitation Fellowship position in a Canadian institution, with a start date before December 31, 2025.

Must be a Canadian resident or permanent resident or hold a valid Canadian work permit or student visa.

Must have prior training and competency in general Physiatry or Neurology in addition to specialized training in stroke rehabilitation.

Must be engaged in scholarly work focused on clinical trials in stroke and/or Vascular Cognitive Impairment. This may take the form of a clinical trial, or analysis of clinical or behavioural trial samples and/or data, and which are aligned with the vision and mission of StrokeCog.

Funding value:  Two-year award.$80,000 per year.

2025 StrokeCog Early Career Researcher Awards in Stroke and Vascular Cognitive Impairment Clinical Trials Funding Opportunity
 

The StrokeCog Early Career Researcher (ECR) Competition provides funding to support early career researchers dedicated to advancing clinical trials in stroke and/or Vascular Cognitive Impairment. StrokeCog ECR funds are intended to boost the development of promising researchers who have recently begun their independent careers and are actively engaged in stroke clinical trials research. By providing much needed early financial support, these awards will accelerate career development and contribute to high-impact clinical trials research in stroke and Vascular Cognitive Impairment.
 
Award Categories:

  • PM&R Stream: Two (2) awards for MD-trained researchers specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Non-PM&R Stream: Five (5) awards for PhD-trained researchers or MDs with a research position (including MD/PhD, MD/MSc)

Funding Structure

Each award provides $200,000 in total funding over two years:

  • $100,000 from StrokeCog for ECR salary support; and
  • $100,000 in matched institutional operating support (maximum in-kind match of 20%)

Eligibility:      

  • Must be a full-time faculty member or principal investigator at an eligible research institution (adjunct positions do not qualify);
  • Must have started their academic career (e.g., independent investigator) between January 1, 2023 to March 1, 2026;
  • Must have completed their first Doctor of Philosophy, Medical Doctor or terminal degree on or after January 1, 2015*
  • For the PM&R Stream: MD applicants must have training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • For the PM&R Stream: Must have protected research time of at least 50% for PM&R MDs;
  • For the non-PM&R Stream: Must have protected research time of at least 50% for MD/MSc and MD/PhD or at least 75% for PhDs;
  • Their research program must involve a focus on clinical trials in stroke and/or Vascular Cognitive Impairment. This may take the form of a clinical trial, or analysis of clinical or behavioural trial samples and/or data, and which are aligned with the vision and mission of StrokeCog.
  • Must not simultaneously hold a salary award for the ECR valued at more than 50% of their annual salary from a national (i.e., CIHR) or provincial funding agency.
  • Must be a Canadian resident or permanent resident or hold a valid Canadian work permit.
