In 2013, CPSR launched a national training and mentorship program to identify and bet on the next big research stars. Our training program attracts and retains hundreds of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP). More than 80% of the 180 who take part in National Training Association (NTA) activities each year stay in the field of stroke recovery. Our popular Stroke Program in Neurorecovery (SPiN) is the most impactful training program for emerging stroke researchers in Canada. In addition to SPiN and our mentorship program, the NTA supports lab exchanges, hosts monthly webinars, and more.
The NTA is led by an Executive Committee with two co-chairs, who are selected each year by the trainees.
"The CPSR and the NTA help new trainees build their knowledge of stroke recovery and their understanding of common challenges and important questions in the field."
Annette Gower, Masters student, University of Ottawa
"The NTA brings together like-minded trainees from varying levels and backgrounds to meet and develop working friendships to pursue possible collaborations."
Andrew Huntley, PhD, Post-doctoral fellow, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

"Being part of the National Trainee Association has provided me with numerous opportunities to network with like-minded scientists and trainees across Canada, which would not have been possible otherwise. I have also benefitted immensely from the comprehensive workshops, covering a wide variety of topics on stroke, ranging from cellular/molecular to systems-level neuroscience."
Priyanka Shah-Basak, PhD, Scientific Associate, Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest
The NTA Executive assigns each NTA member to be part of a mentor-mentee relationship. We match CPSR scientists with PDFs, PDFs with PhD students, and PhD students with MSc students. To get an idea of expectations, please click on the link for mentor and mentee guidelines. The NTA Executive reviews all pairings and tries to best match according to area of interest, geography, etc. However, we are also very interested in hearing back from you prior to the pairing process. If you have a specific request or person you would like to be paired with, please let us know. Send your requests to firstname.lastname@example.org.
